Tradition has it that words which touch the skin have a particular power. Poesy rings were traditionally given in sterling silver as engagement or betrothal rings, and then replaced with the same gold ring upon marriage. Poesy or love rings are rings engraved with a brief poem or sentiment. These inscribed rings are found as early as classical times but reached their greatest popularity in the 16th and 17th century when they were used as a wedding ring, a lover's token or as a means of showing regard depending on the sentiment expressed in the poesy. This replica ring is based on the inscription found on an original poesy ring now in the British Museum. The original of the ring, with a delicate interlacing Celtic pattern engraved on the outside, and the poesy "yours onli" in Middle English spelling is engraved on the inside. Medieval spellings were inconsistent and are rendered here as found on the original ring.
